I AM

Kamali Williams

i am black
being black is a blessing
i know being black is the fight

the fight that young black girls should
love the skin that you’re born in
not to hate it

i am black
i’ve been bullied before
i know my skin is different than yours
i didn’t understand the hate

being black is holding back pent up anger
they can’t see you like that
they’ll call meyou the ‘angry black woman’
but you’re just tired
tired of seeing your brothers and sisters
being killed by the police
but they don’t understand

they don’t understand
that society is feeding me to the stereotypes
i know i’m black
stop following me when shopping
no, i don’t want to become a basketball star
Why can’t I just be me?

being a black woman
society always wants to tear you down
where you think down is where you’re supposed to be
but
pick your head up
your crown is falling
because

being black is joy
i’m proud to say that i’m black
all these hardships i go through
is for the future
because
being black is my happiness
